Local Area

Christchurch's unique location at the confluence of the rivers Stour and Avon, and on the shores of its own spectacular natural harbour, make it the perfect destination to relax and unwind.

It is an ancient market town and is renowned for its heritage and history, in particular its 11th century Priory church, Norman castle remains and Saxon mill which was mentioned in the Domesday book.

Just a two-minute walk from the Quarterdeck you will find the picturesque town quay where sailing boats are moored, and a grassed area known as the ‘Quomps’ provides the venue for many events, and space for families and friends to relax, and play.  The band stand is popular for music events.

Children will love playing on the equipment in the playground on the Quomps, and splashing around in the Splash Park.  There is crazy golf at the Boathouse river cafe.

Vintage ferry trips can be taken along the river to Mudeford sandbank, or to Tuckton tea gardens.  Self-drive motor boat hire is also available from the quay.  There is a beautiful riverside walk which meanders past the Place Mill (now an art gallery); along the Convent Walk, to the twin bridges on Bridge Street in the town centre.

There is a Public slipway (near to the playground), and the ‘Wick ferry’ will take you across the river, where you can walk across Wick Meadow to the Hengistbury Head Outdoor Pursuits Centre which offers a wide range of water-based activities.  A little further along, you will find the Hengistbury Head visitors' centre and the terminus for the Noddy land train which will take you down the winding track to Mudeford sandspit.  This is a unique area, with over 300 residential beach huts and the wonderful Beach House cafe/restaurant. The views are stunning!

The waters in and around Christchurch are renowned for providing the best all-round fishing in the country.  Visiting anglers can obtain short-term permits from Davis Tackle, on Bargates.

There are two golf courses and a driving range in Christchurch, along with the Two Riversmeet Leisure Centre which has a 25m main pool and 12.5m training pool, a fitness suite, 3G football pitches, squash courts, sports hall, indoor cycling studio and a cafe.

There is a diverse range of places to eat and drink in Christchurch, ranging from fine-dining restaurants, trendy bistros, Indian, Thai and Chinese restaurants, pizza parlours, cafes, traditional pubs and quaint tea rooms.  Many are located in the town centre and can easily be reached on foot from the Quarterdeck.

Shops in the town include interesting independent specialist shops and national chains.  There is a M&S Simply Food store on the High Street, and Waitrose is also nearby.  Tesco and Sainsbury’s Supermarkets can be reached in about 5 minutes by car.  A large traditional market is held in the High Street every Monday.

The Regent Centre, on the High Street, offers an extensive programme of events, concerts, plays, musicals and exhibitions, along with current film releases and live links to the New York Opera House.

Christchurch offers an excellent programme of events throughout the year, including the annual food festival, carnival, fair, international markets and concerts in the Priory.  Everything that is located in this historic town is within easy walking distance of the Quarterdeck.
